Thinking of Volunteering? |
Kingston Literacy is a not-for-profit agency that offers free upgrading classes for adults. Most of the 1-to-1 tutoring is done by volunteers. Perhaps you are one of them!

Training Before you are matched with a student you will have an interview with our tutor coordinator, then you will take part in a training course, delivered in eight sessions. The training course is generally offered in the fall, winter, and spring. Please call about one month before the training dates to set up an interview. Four sessions are delivered in group meetings at one of Kingston Literacy's locations. Imagine, you will sit around a table with real, live people and talk in the old-fashioned way. Four of the sessions are delivered to you on-line. Access to these sessions will be provided through an email sent to you by the tutor coordinator. If working on-line is new to you and you'd like some help, we could arrange a convenient time for you to use the computers at one of our learning centres. Details of these sessions are posted in this calendar.

| After Training After successfully finishing the eight sessions in this tutor training course, you will be matched with one of our students. The student will already have met a few times with a staff member and together they will have outlined learning goals and a basic plan of action. As the tutor, you'll work with your student to decide on the contents of each of your tutoring sessions. There are lots of resources at Kingston Literacy but you'll seek them out yourself, finding the ones that you both like using.

| Where? The majority of our students and tutors meet at one of our locations, rather than at home. It seems to work better that way: you've got everything handy - books, materials, computers, photocopier, coffee, and other humans.

| How Often? Most student-and-tutor pairs meet once a week for a 2-hour session. Of course, more often is more effective, but you probably have other things to do too. So if you can make it only once a week - thank you for your time!
