The Zalman Yanovsky Award For Outstanding Service to Literacy is given in memory of Zalman Yanovsky (1944-2002), a long-time volunteer of Kingston Literacy. Most people knew Zal as a musician, restaurateur and raconteur. Few knew him for the contributions he made to the advancement of literacy in Kingston.
Zalman joined the Board of Kingston Literacy in 1991. Throughout his tenure on the Board, he helped steer the fund raising efforts of the organization. Using his community connections and his larger than life personality, he organized the Annual Celebrity Book Auction. On several occasions, with his wife, the late Rose Richardson, he generously offered the services of Chez Piggy to cater fund raising events. These were examples of the public contributions Zalman made to Kingston Literacy.
Zalman also contributed to literacy on a more personal and private level. With a quiet and uncharacteristic modesty, Zalman had students that he tutored. He was particularly concerned for young people, at the beginning of their adult life, at that confusing time when making informed decisions starts to be so important. Zalman was one of those individuals who actually practiced what he preached.
